FRESH INSTALL BACKUP AND RESTORE

Windows 10, dual boot setup, 2 ssd drives

Sorry if this is a long post, I actually have several related issues.

I have been using Backerupper for some time now.  Creating a system backup is straght forward, no problem.

However, I dont know if I am following the proper steps when resotring, because I must make certain adaptations to get the job done.

When a system backup is created, it produces a recovery partition, a bootpartition, and the operating system partition.

My problem is that when I want to restore, I am not given the option to highlight the 3 current partition that must be replaced.  If I just choose the largest partition (operating system), and continue to restore, I ene up with a mess of extra partitions, and the system will not boot up.

If I want it to work, I must first delete the destination partitions first, and then the restore process goes smoothly.

Also, after the process is complete, the original drive letter for the operating system partition has been assigned to the recovery partition, and then obviously the system partition drive letter is different than it was, and all must be changed, which I dont think is the best practiceand I would like to avoid.

Something new just occurred recently.  I attempted to do a fresh install onone ssd from an installatioin disk.

In this scenario, it is necessary to delete the 3 currently intstalledpartitions.  I did so and completed the installation.

When I booted up, it took me to the freshly installed partition. However, I was unable to boot up to operating system on my other ssd (via the F11 boot menu).

I went into disk management on the fresh install.  For the fresh install, there was only one partition; no boot partition, no recovery partition.

I had a multitude of problems after that.  I troubleshooted the whole day every way I could think of.  I restored the fresh partition with a previous backups, thinking everything would get back to normal, but things went haywire.

At first I was able to do system restores.  Eventually, during the system restores, I was told the backups were corrupt, even though I knew they were not.

Starting getting all sorts of boot errors. BSOD crashes on both ssds. Tried to go thru the system repair, no help.  Finally, the machine wouldnot boot, period.

It even crashed in DOS when I tried to do a restore with the backerupperrecovery disk!

I pretty much gave up. but tried one more thing.  I pressed the power buttonfor about 15 second to reset the machine.

Like a miracle, the unit started up, and everything was back to normal! It was bizarre.

So, I would still like to do a fresh install and backup, but I need to know what I did wrong, in all areas.  I dont want to go thru that again.

Thanks for listening this long story.

Does a System Restore also a (NTFS) format before restore?

$

Assume I have a Win 7 partition (among others). It is uncertain if system files on the partion are corrupt or the NTFS cluster structures on it.

So if I boot from a Backupper BootCD and do a System Restore (with a former archive from another partition).

Does this System restore a NTFS format prior to the copy of the previous backup files?

If this is NOT the case and the underlying NTFS cluster structures are damaged then Backupper copies only valid files onto a partition with invalid NTFS structures.....wich is nonsese.

So Backupper should actually do a NTFS format before System Restore.

Can you confirm this?

Noobie for AOMEI coming from Acronis True Image

I have been a long time user of Acronis True Image.   I was never really aware of this company until just recently when Acronis decided to update their product to a defective release with poor support (ATIH 2017).   I was on a subscription based plan and I have asked them to cancel my service and issue a refund.

In the interim, I am now searching for an alternative and came across AOMEI Backupper.   I currently have about 6-7 laptops to backup at home at any given time.   Although I wanted to use Cloud service, I am now considering installing a NAS device into my home network.

What would be the best solution to use with AOMEI?   Doesn't have to be the free service.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

How to create a disk image

$

I'm getting help from folks on bleepingcomputer.com, and they've suggested I create a disk image using AOMEI (free) before I proceed further in trying to fix my husband's old XP laptop which contains much software that is precious to him and unobtainable except on this one computer.

I'm typing this message on my own (Windows 7) laptop.

I tried to download AOMEI Backupper Standard Edition on his computer, first using Local Download, which didn't seem to work, and then using "Download from CNET" which I think did work.  I believe I probably installed the software - not sure - but then I ended up on what seems to be a completely different website, that seems to have done a malware scan and now wants $39.95 to fix the issues they supposedly found...?  Advance System Care?

Can anyone point me directly to what I need to do, to create a disk image of the dysfunctional computer whose special software I hope to preserve?  I'm going to X out of this Advance System Care site...

Thanks so much --

Backupper 3.2 restore problem - not enough reserve space

$

First I wan't to thank you for such a really good backup software.
I like it very much and I was planning to buy the Backupper Pro version, but now I have a serious problem.

I'm trying to restore a system image to the EXACT same SSD (Samsung 850 Pro 128 GB) and got the "Code 214: Not enough reserve space" error message. I've not checked the "Align partition to optimize for SSD" option.

So it is the same SSD and I changed nothing on the partition layout. I'm using Windows 10 and have 4 partitions on the SSD.
For restore I'm using the Backupper version 3.2 WinPE boot image on CD.

I've tried to restore all four partitions one after the other and while it works it won't boot, probably because Backupper change the size and start sector of the partitions and in one partition the boot manager is located.

Maybe it is the old restore problem known from the Backupper version 2.0 ("destination disk too small"), I read about in this forum.

How do I restore? Can you please help me with this problem?

Thank you very much,
TechGuy

New to AOMEI Do not understand why system backup file is so large

$

Hi all I have had AOMEI backupper for just a couple of days and have made two backups 1 system and 1 file backup.

The system backup took at least 3 hours. I'm not sure as I had to leave it running. But the main problem is the size of the file.

It is 403GB! this is for a system on a 240gb SSD and only 90Gb of that is used.

I have used shadow protect for years and always loved it but lately they have mucked up their software and I am getting nowhere with them. I mention this because a full backup of the same system using shadowprotect only uses 70.8Gb.

How can a backup take 403Gb when I am only using 90Gb

BTW I left the compression on the default setting when I ran the backup.

The file backup is ok taking 26GB backing up my user folder of 43GB

Update just tried to restore the image to another drive for test purposes and when I select the image I get "Invalid Image File. This file may not be complete or has been damaged"

I am thinking that I ran out of space on my 2TB backup drive as I notice it is now completely full. Obviously I didn't expect sauch a large file to be made.

thanks

Mike

AOMEI Backupper Pro fails after WIndows 10 Anniversary Update

$

I have been using Backupper Pro for several years now, always working OK. Using the latest version.

However, after Windows 10 Anniversary Update the backup schedule does not seem to work anymore.

It doesn't matter if I schedule it through the Windows task scheduler or through Backupper's own service.

The program backups correctly for four times according to the set schedule.

After those four times the program refuses to make another backup with that schedule.

I can only do a manual backup or make a new backup schedule that then runs for only four times.

I am sure I have set the schedules and options correctly because I have exported them before doing the Anniversary Update (when everything was working OK for months) and imported them afterwards.

If I check the Windows task scheduler it says for instance that a new run is due at 6:00 PM, but when that time arrives the program doesn't start and it just skips to the next time due for a backup. The time of the last run doesn't change either, it remains the same as the time of the last successful backup. There is no error code in the Windows task scheduler either (it remains 0x0), it is as if the program just didn't run and was just skipped.

If I set the backup schedule through Backupper's own service the same thing happens. If I then reboot the program does start at login (this is the extra option when running a backup through the own service, not available through Windows task scheduler). I can see it starts because the icon appears in the tray, but then the whole computer freezes and I have to do a hard reset.

Can anyone confirm this? Most strange behavior...

Help with System Restore

$

Hello, I am not very knowledgable when it comes to this type of stuff and need someone to explain what this note I am getting means.

Recently my Hard Drive started failing which i found out because my computer wouldn't boot up. I eventually managed to boot it for long enough to create a system backup of my entire hard drive onto an external hard drive.

I then replaced the failing hard drive with a new one. I installed windows 10 onto the new hard drive so I could re-download AOMEI Backupper. So now I plugged in the external hard drive with the system backup and started AOMEI Backupper.

I chose restore then selected the system backup from my external hard drive. I get the message "The program detects the selected backup is a system image, would you like to do a system restore?".

I choose yes, and select the backup point to restore. However when I select the destination to restore to I get this note in the bottom.

Should I just click next and start the system restore or am I doing something wrong?

Bootable USBs based upon UEFI

AOMEI Backupper - HDD Failure after clicking 'Cancel' while cloning

$

I was using the AOMEI Backupper Standard to clone a HDD.

Source was a WD 1 TB Black HDD (primary drive in my computer)
Destination was a WD 1 TB Green HDD (in an external USB enclosure).

Within 30 seconds of the start I changed my mind and clicked 'Cancel'.

I believe the cloning hadn't started yet and the Backupper program was in the

information gathering stage.

Now the destination HDD is not seen when attached to my computer, either in

the external USB enclosure or when installed as the primary drive.

The HDD still works - I can hear and feel the disk spinning.

I have reviewed the 'Clone' section of the AOMEI Backupper User Manual (p.

31, 32) and there is no mention of the 'Cancel' button.

Do you know what is wrong?
What needs to be done to the HDD so it is recognized by my computer?

If the HDD cannot be recovered, may I respectfully suggest that some sort of

message be put in the Backupper program to warn future users about the

times during the cloning process when clicking the 'Cancel' button will result

in the loss of their HDD.

Error Code 33 - creating system image of SSD

$

I am getting a code 33, bad sector, everytime I try to system image my SSD (C drive).  I had run chkdsk with varying options and run  surface check with Partition Magic. Neither showed any problems.  I have also degfragged it.  But none of this has made a difference.

It used to work fine with the same SSD then for no discernible reason, it started failing and has never worked since.  I have updated to the latest version of AOMEI but to no avail.

I have been most impressed with AOMEI and recommended it as an alternative to W7 backup in Microsoft forums so hope there is a simple fix for this.

Anyone had this?  Anyone know a fix?
